Berlin School Registration: The School Your Address Already Picked

There is a fortnight in October when Berlin decides where its next class of six year olds will spend the following six years, and most of the families it affects find out about it from another parent in the Kita hallway.
This year the window is 5 to 16 October 2026. Ten working days. You go in person, you take your child, and you go to one specific school: not the one with the good reputation, not the one on your way to work, but the Grundschule that the boundary around your flat has already chosen. Berlin calls that boundary an Einschulungsbereich, and there are 394 of them drawn across the city.
If your child was born between 1 October 2020 and 30 September 2021, this is your fortnight. Registration is a legal duty, not an invitation.

Grundschule am Traveplatz on Jessnerstrasse in Friedrichshain. Every Berlin address sits inside exactly one catchment, and that catchment names a building like this one.
What Berlin school registration actually asks of you
The Senate's registration page is short, and it is short because the process is genuinely simple once you accept the first rule: you do not choose the school, you register at the one you were given.
The essentials for this round:
5 to 16 October 2026 is the whole window. There is no online alternative for the main registration.
You must appear in person. The Senate also recommends bringing the child, and most schools expect it.
The school is the one your Einschulungsbereich points to, which in practice is normally the nearest public Grundschule. Your Bezirksschulamt tells you which one.
Children born 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2021 become schulpflichtig on 1 August 2027.
You register at that school even if you intend to send your child to a private school, and even if you plan to apply to a different public one.
That last line is the one people get wrong. The assigned school is the entry point to the whole system. Skip it and you are not outside the queue, you are simply not in it.
The school your address already picked
Berlin publishes the catchment boundaries as open geodata, so I pulled the whole set from the Geoportal on 17 September 2026 and counted what is actually inside them. 394 catchment areas, 413 public primary schools, and every school falls inside exactly one boundary.
The shapes are wildly uneven, because they are drawn around children and not around tidy geography:
356 areas hold exactly one public primary school. For those addresses the answer is unambiguous.
28 areas hold two or three. Berlin does run shared catchments, and where it does, the school office lets families say which of them they want. Mitte has eight such areas, more than any other district.
10 areas hold none at all. Four of them are in Pankow and four in Lichtenberg. Children there walk over the boundary to a school that stands in somebody else's area.
The smallest catchment covers 0.13 km², a few Pankow blocks. The largest covers 27.58 km² out in Treptow-Köpenick, which is 209 times bigger. The median is 1.28 km².
Marzahn-Hellersdorf is the tidiest district in the city on this measure: 35 areas, 35 schools, one each, no overlaps and no gaps. Mitte is the messiest, and messy here is good news, because a shared catchment is the one situation where the boundary hands you a genuine choice without an application.
The map below draws all 394 of them from the Senate's own geometry. Pick your district, then your area, and it names the school behind the line.

What to bring, and the form people forget
The school builds the Anmeldebogen for you at the desk and you sign it there, so there is no paperwork to prepare in advance beyond proving who you both are:
Your own identity papers.
The child's birth certificate.
Any other identity papers for the child.
The Hort application, if you want after-school care. This is the one that catches people out.
Anything that helps the school understand your child's needs, such as medical or developmental records.
The after-school place, officially the ergänzende Förderung und Betreuung, is applied for at the same appointment and processed by the Jugendamt, not the school. The Jugendamt must receive it at least three months before the school year begins, and it is free for the first three school years. For children starting school, the extra hours are free too: 6:00 to 7:30 in the morning, 16:00 to 18:00 in the afternoon, and 6:00 to 18:00 in the holidays.
My advice: fill the Hort form even if you are not sure you need the place. A Bedarfsbescheid you decline later costs you nothing. A Bedarfsbescheid you apply for in June, when your working hours change, arrives after the school year has started.
If you want a different school
You can ask for another public Grundschule or Gemeinschaftsschule, and thousands of Berlin families do every October. The sequence matters more than the wish.
Register at your assigned school first. Then, at that same appointment, submit a written application with reasons for the school you actually want. You can pre-fill that application online and bring it printed and signed, which is worth doing because the reasons box is not something to improvise at a desk with a five year old pulling your sleeve.
The Bezirksschulamt decides, and § 55a Abs. 2 of the Berlin Schulgesetz sets the grounds in ranked order:
First priority: attending the assigned school would damage long standing, deeply rooted personal ties to other children, siblings above all.
Second: you specifically want that school's programme, its foreign language, or its particular all-day model.
Third: the chosen school would make caring for the child significantly easier, above all because of your working hours.
Two things follow from that list. Distance is not on it, so "the other school is four minutes closer" is not an argument the law recognises. And every request is capped by the same sentence in the regulation: it is granted only if that school still has room after its own catchment children are placed.
There is one quiet clause worth knowing. If a boundary is redrawn and your child ends up outside the catchment of the school an older sibling already attends, you can ask for the child to be treated as though you still lived there, and that school becomes the assigned one. That is not a request competing for leftover places. That is a change of address on paper.
The map above ends by drawing a 1.5 km ring around your catchment and listing the other public primary schools inside it. In a dense Neukölln Kiez that ring can hold fifteen schools. In parts of Treptow-Köpenick it holds none, and there the honest answer is that an application means a real commute.

Selma-Lagerlöf-Grundschule in Marzahn. Out here catchments are large and the map is simple: 35 areas, 35 schools, one apiece.
The all-day clause hidden in your assignment
Berlin runs two different all-day models and your assigned school may not run the one you want.
Of the 392 public Grundschulen offering care from 6:00 to 18:00, 330 (84.2%) use the open model, where the day is built around normal lessons and the extra hours are booked. 41 schools (10.5%) are gebundene Ganztagsschulen, where the long day is compulsory for everyone and the teaching is spread across it. A further 21 run both, class by class.
If your assigned school is a gebundene Ganztagsschule and that model is genuinely wrong for your family, you do not have to argue your way out through the wish-school process. The rule is written the other way round: the district places your child in one of its open all-day schools instead. Say so at registration.

The Havel-Grundschule in Hakenfelde, one of Berlin's newer builds. A new school changes the boundaries around it, which is why catchments are redrawn as numbers move.
Starting a year later, or a year early
Berlin lets the date move in both directions, and the traffic is overwhelmingly one way.
Zurückstellung, a year's deferral, is decided by the Schulaufsicht. You need a statement from the Kita, the school medical examination has to happen by the end of February 2027, and the application deadline is 26 February 2027. It is granted only when a further year of targeted support in a Kita is genuinely the better path, it can be used only once, and it is impossible once school has started.
This route is far more common than most parents realise. Of the 35,571 children Berlin enrolled in 2025/26, 4,547 (12.8%) arrived after a deferral. Roughly one in every eight first-graders in the city started a year late.
Early entry runs the other way and is rare. If your child was born between 1 October 2021 and 31 March 2022 you can apply, on one condition: the child must need no language support, proven with a QuaSta form or the BeoKiz language assessment. Born after 31 March 2022 and the earliest start is summer 2028. In 2025/26 only 720 children, 2.0% of the intake, came in this way.

A school entrance on Ehrlichstraße in Karlshorst. The Schulamt, not the school at the door, makes the final placement and writes to you.
The language test that carries a fine
This one sits outside the October window and it reaches families who never set foot in a Kita.
Every Berlin child who will be schulpflichtig the year after next and does not attend a Kita is invited to a language assessment, and participation is compulsory under § 55 of the Schulgesetz. If the test shows a need, the child must attend pre-school language support: 35 hours a week, seven hours a day, five days a week, running until 31 July before enrolment.
Missing it is an Ordnungswidrigkeit. Under § 126 of the same law it can be fined up to 2,500 euros. Children already in a Kita are assessed inside the Kita and their parents have nothing separate to do, which is a decent argument for a Kita place on its own. If you are still hunting for one, I have written separately about how Kita places in Berlin actually get allocated. For the adult end of the same language problem, what a German course in Berlin actually costs is a separate piece.
What happens after you walk out
The October appointment is the start of a chain that runs for ten months.
The Kinder- und Jugendgesundheitsdienst examines your child. You get the booking information at registration.
The Schulamt, not the school, allocates the place. In individual cases it can place a child at a different Grundschule for organisational reasons, and it tells you in writing when it does.
If you applied for a Hort place you receive a Bedarfsbescheid from the Jugendamt, then sign a contract with the Jugendamt or the provider.
Saturday 21 August 2027 is the Einschulungsfeier. Lessons start Monday 23 August 2027. Hort care can begin from 1 August.
That free holiday cover is worth knowing about before the first Herbstferien, when Berlin's public libraries turn back into the other free indoor room in the city.
One structural thing worth knowing if you grew up outside Germany, because it changes how much this decision matters: the Berlin Grundschule runs six years, not four. Years one and two are taught as a single flexible Schulanfangsphase that a child can cross in two years or three. The building you register at in October is, for most families, the next six years of school runs, friendships and parents' evenings, which is also why the Brückentage worth booking in 2027 start mattering to you in a way they never did before.
My advice: do two things this week. Open the map above and find the school your address points to, so the name is not a surprise in a letter. Then, if you want a different school, write the reasons paragraph now while you have an evening, and print it. Everything else in October is a queue and a signature.
Berlin is a city where the rules are usually fair and almost never advertised. Ten working days, one building, one form nobody mentions. Put 5 October in the calendar and the rest of it looks small.
