The Oberbaumbrücke looks medieval, but it opened in 1896, and for twenty-eight years the border between East and West Berlin ran straight across the water beneath it. This walk-through takes you across the bridge one stop at a time, from the Kreuzberg bank to the Friedrichshain bank, so you can see what each point was during the divided years and what is there today.

The border ran through the middle
When the Wall went up in 1961, the frontier between the American sector in Kreuzberg and the Soviet sector in Friedrichshain ran along the Spree, so the whole bridge became part of the East Berlin border. From December 1963 it worked as a foot crossing, and only West Berlin residents were allowed across. The steel middle section marks the old line, and the bridge reopened on 9 November 1994, five years to the day after the Wall fell.
Where to stand, and when
The best experience is on foot on the lower deck, on the downstream side. Wait for a yellow U-Bahn to cross overhead for the classic shot, then look upstream to catch the Molecule Man standing in the river. Come in the late afternoon into dusk, when the brick glows and the neon game set into the arch over the water lights up.
Turn it into a short walk
The Oberbaumbrücke works best as the hinge of a small walk. The East Side Gallery runs along the Friedrichshain bank right up to the bridge, and Warschauer Straße with the RAW yard is a short walk on. Cross back into Kreuzberg for the canal and Wrangelkiez.
