The Latest You Can Leave for Each English Tour at Hohenschönhausen
The former Stasi remand prison in Hohenschönhausen can only be seen on a guided tour, and the English tours run at 10:40, 12:40 and 14:40. The prison at Hohenschönhausen is not a museum you can wander through. The cells, the corridors and the interrogation rooms open only on a guided tour, and in English there are three a day. That turns the visit into a timing problem rather than an opening-hours problem, and it is the reason people either miss a slot or lose the wrong half of their day. Where the numbers come from
Journey times were read from the VBB journey planner for a normal weekday, door to door, including the walk from the stop to Genslerstraße 66. Where a route varied across the three tour windows, the board uses the slowest of the three, because the tour will not wait. The stop trap it is really about
Four stops in Alt-Hohenschönhausen carry a version of the memorial’s name and only one of them is close. The lower chart draws all four to scale from the gate at Genslerstraße 66:
Große-Leege-Str./Freienwalder Str., bus 256 only, about 280 metres
Freienwalder Str., tram M5 only, about 570 metres, the stop the memorial itself recommends
Genslerstr., trams M5, M6 and 16, about 850 metres, at the wrong end of a long street
S Hohenschönhausen, the S-Bahn station, about 2.8 kilometres from the gate
If you are riding the M5 and see Genslerstr. come up, stay on one more stop. The memorial’s own directions carry a flat instruction not to use the S-Bahn station at all.
What it is not
It is a planning board, not a live departure board. Tram and bus frequencies change in the evening and at weekends, engineering works move things around, and the memorial adjusts its tour programme seasonally.
