How Much Wohngeld Would Your Berlin Household Get?
Type in the people in your flat, your rent without heating and your gross pay. The estimate uses the Wohngeld formula in force for 2026 with Berlin’s rent level, a map of rent against pay shows where your household’s claim runs out, and your district’s average waiting time shows when a decision is likely.
The formula, the Berlin rent caps (rent level IV) and the heating and climate components come from the Wohngeld law, Annexes 1 to 3, in force since 1 January 2025, and the tool reproduces the federal building ministry’s published 2025 example calculations exactly. Waiting times are the district averages for December 2025 from the Berlin Senate’s answer to written question 19/25882. Checked on 18 September 2026. It is an estimate: only your district’s Wohnungsamt decides.
Most people in Berlin who could get Wohngeld never apply, because they assume their pay is too high. The formula counts less of your income than you think, and a draft reform for January 2027 makes an application filed this year worth more. This tool shows where your household sits.
Berlin caps the rent that counts
The formula counts your Bruttokaltmiete, base rent plus service charges without heating, up to 530.20 euro for one person, 643.80 euro for two and 892.40 euro for four. It then adds a fixed heating relief of 110.40 euro for one person and 197.80 euro for four.
Income counts after deductions
The office deducts the 1,230 euro employee allowance per earner and then 10 percent each for income tax, health insurance and pension contributions. Single parents with a child under 18 get a further 1,320 euro a year off. Kindergeld is not counted.
Why 2026 applications matter
A draft law approved by the federal cabinet on 6 July 2026 would halve the heating component and change the formula from 1 January 2027. Under its transition rule, an application filed in 2026 keeps its December 2026 amount for the rest of the approval period if the new rules would pay less.
What this tool cannot know
It leaves out maintenance you pay, disability allowances and special income rules, and it cannot check your documents. People on Grundsicherungsgeld and most students with a BAföG claim are excluded from Wohngeld. Use it to decide whether to apply, then let the Wohnungsamt calculate.
