How to choose the area
Mitte is the minimum-travel choice near the historic center. Kantstrasse works when you want several restaurants in one walk. Kreuzberg gives you a fully vegan restaurant and mixed-menu alternatives. Dong Xuan is a separate daytime market trip rather than a single dinner reservation.
The Dong Xuan check
Take tram M8 to Herzbergstr./Dong-Xuan. The center publishes 10:00 to 20:00 from Wednesday to Monday and Tuesday closed, while individual businesses can keep different hours. Payment methods vary, so carry a card plus some cash.
Why the history matters
Vietnamese migration reached both sides of divided Berlin through different routes. South Vietnamese refugees arrived in West Berlin from the late 1970s, while a 1980 agreement brought Vietnamese contract workers to the GDR. Those histories help explain the strong community presence in Lichtenberg and the range of Vietnamese food across the city today.
