Which Berlin Museums Are Closed, and Until When
Four Berlin institutions are behind hoarding at the moment, and two of them will not be back for years. Pick the collection you came to see and this board shows its return date on a timeline that runs from today to 2038, plus what is worth doing instead this week.

People still fly to Berlin for the Pergamon Altar and find no door they can use. The museum has been shut since October 2023, and the wing that holds the Ishtar Gate is not expected back until around 2037. Two other big names are shut with no announced return at all. This board puts all of it on one timeline so you can see, in one look, whether the thing you came for is a wait of months, a wait of a decade, or a wait with no end date printed anywhere. Then it tells you what is genuinely worth doing instead, this week, in the same city.
What this tool does
It draws every currently closed Berlin collection as a bar on one time axis. The bar starts today and ends on the date the institution has published for its return. Where no date has been published the bar runs off the right edge, which is the honest way to draw a building site with no schedule. Pick the thing you actually came to see and the panel gives you its wing, its return date and the nearest substitute that is open this week.
Where the dates come from
Every date was read on 8 September 2026 from the institution that owns the building. The Pergamonmuseum renovation page publishes 4 June 2027 for the north wing and around 2037 for the south wing. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin opening hours page lists which houses are shut and which close on unusual weekdays. The Museum Berggruen profile page gives 5 September 2022 as its closure date. The Deutsches Historisches Museum building works page states that no reliable reopening date can be given yet. Prices come from the state museums ticket system.
The two Pergamon dates are not the same kind of date
This is the distinction the board exists to make. One is a fixed date the museum runs a public countdown to. The other is an estimate more than a decade out, for a wing that stays closed after the famous 2027 reopening.
4 June 2027 brings back the Pergamon Altar, the hall of hellenistic architecture and the entire Museum für Islamische Kunst in the north wing.
Around 2037 is the estimate for the south wing, which holds the Vorderasiatisches Museum with the Ishtar Gate and the Processional Way, and the hall of Roman architecture.
From June 2027 the Vorderasiatisches Museum shows only a selection of highlights in one hall of the north wing, and the museum has not said which objects those will be.
What it is not
It is not a ticket shop and not a live opening-hours feed. Building schedules move, especially the ones without a published date, so treat the bars as the current public position and check the house itself before you book a flight around it.
