Which Berlin Monthly Ticket Is Actually Cheapest for You?
Berlin sells a monthly ticket for its own city that costs more than the one valid on every regional train in Germany. A VBB Umweltkarte for Berlin AB is 81.30 euros a month on a subscription and 113 without a contract, while the Deutschlandticket is 63. Single fares used for the pay-as-you-go lines are the 4.00 euro AB Einzelfahrschein and the 12.40 euro 4-Fahrten-Karte. Fares change; re-check them before you sign anything.
Most people in Berlin chose their transport ticket once and never looked again, which is how a card that stops at the city boundary ends up costing more than one valid to the Baltic coast. The honest question is not which ticket is cheapest in the abstract. It is how many rides you really make in a month, whether anyone else needs to borrow the card, and whether you leave the city. The number that should make you look again
A VBB Umweltkarte for Berlin AB costs 81.30 euros a month on a subscription. The Deutschlandticket costs 63 and is valid on every local and regional service in the country. The Berlin-only ticket is 18.30 euros a month more expensive for a smaller map, and bought month by month without a contract at 113 euros it is 50 euros a month more, which is 600 euros over a year.
Where the break-even sits against single tickets
At the 4.00 euro AB single fare the Deutschlandticket pays for itself on your sixteenth ride of the month, which is eight return journeys. On 4-Fahrten-Karten at 3.10 euros a ride the crossing point moves to twenty-one. The Umweltkarte AB needs twenty-one single rides and the contract-free Monatskarte needs twenty-nine. The board marks each of those crossings with a ring so you can see how far your own month sits from it.
What the expensive local ticket actually buys
Two things, and they are the whole case for it. The Umweltkarte is transferable, so a flatmate or partner can take the card while you are away, and from 20:00 on weekdays until 03:00, plus all day at weekends and on public holidays, it carries up to four people of whom only one may be older than 14. The Deutschlandticket is personal and carries nobody. Tick either of those requirements and the board removes the Deutschlandticket from the ranking.
Zone C, and the gap that opens outside the city
BER and Potsdam sit in zone C, so an AB card does not reach them. The choices are an Umweltkarte ABC at 103.30 euros or the Deutschlandticket at 63, which covers the airport trains, Potsdam and every RE and RB out of Berlin. That is 40.30 euros a month for the smaller ticket, and it is only worth paying when you also need the transfer and evening-carriage rights.
What this board cannot decide for you
It compares one person against one month of standard fares. It does not know whether your employer offers a Deutschlandticket Job at up to 44.10 euros, which beats everything here, and it cannot count the second person in your household who would otherwise buy their own ticket. Both of those change the answer, so read the ranking as the floor of the decision rather than the end of it.
