How Much of a Claim Would Your Contents Policy Actually Pay?

Set your flat size and the sum insured written on your Hausratversicherung. The chart draws what you get back for a loss of any size, marks the proportional underinsurance cut, and puts the two Berlin police averages for 2025 on the same axis.

Built on the 650 euro per square metre benchmark that German insurers use as the minimum sum insured, and on the underinsurance rule in the published model contents conditions: the payout is reduced in the same ratio as the sum insured to the real replacement value, even when only part of the household was hit. Berlin figures are the Polizeiliche Kriminalstatistik Berlin 2025, read on 20 September 2026: an average of 8,832 euro per completed home burglary and 1,246 euro per stolen bicycle.

People compare contents insurance on the monthly premium. The figure that decides a claim is the sum insured, and below the industry benchmark every payout is cut in proportion, from the first euro. This chart shows that cut in money instead of in small print.

The benchmark is 650 euro per square metre

German contents tariffs quote against a minimum sum insured of 650 euro per square metre of living space. For the average Berlin rented flat of 68.2 square metres that is 44,330 euro. Insure at that level and the contract normally carries an Unterversicherungsverzicht, the waiver that switches the proportional cut off.

Under the benchmark, the cut hits every claim

Underinsurance is not a ceiling that only bites on a total loss. The model conditions reduce the payout in the ratio between the sum insured and the real replacement value of everything you own, and they say expressly that this applies even when only parts of the household were damaged.

The bicycle clause is capped separately

A bike taken from the flat, the cellar or a locked bike room on the same plot is covered as contents. A bike taken from the street needs a separate clause, and that clause is usually capped at one to two percent of the sum insured. On the average Berlin flat one percent is 443 euro against an average stolen bike worth 1,246 euro.

What this tool leaves out

It does not price a policy and it does not know what your things are really worth: it uses the 650 euro per square metre benchmark as the stand-in for replacement value. Excess, jewellery and cash sub-limits, and any Elementarschaden add-on are your own contract. Take the result to the policy, not to an insurer.
