What this map shows
The map uses the same U6, U8 and north-south S-Bahn tunnels in two states. The 1961 view marks 15 sealed stations and Friedrichstrasse border station. The current view shows the reopened network and the one former ghost station, Französische Strasse, that later closed for an ordinary transport change.
Why the trains kept moving
After the Wall went up on 13 August 1961, several West Berlin lines still crossed under East Berlin. Trains slowed through dark platforms but did not stop. Entrances were sealed and guarded because the tunnels crossed the border below the city.
The Friedrichstrasse exception
Friedrichstrasse remained a controlled transfer point. Western passengers could change between the U6 and S-Bahn inside a sealed area, while the nearby Tränenpalast handled border departures above ground.
Where to see the story now
Start at Nordbahnhof, where a free permanent exhibition in the mezzanine explains the ghost stations and the Berlin Wall Memorial is directly above. Friedrichstrasse and the Tränenpalast are the clearest second stop.
