Who needs a visa
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need no visa or ETIAS for a short visit, and the Schengen 90/180 cap does not apply; stays beyond three months can involve residence conditions and registration. Common visa-exempt passports include the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea. Other travellers normally need a Schengen short-stay visa, but document and residence status can change the answer.
EES and ETIAS in plain terms
EES has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and normally covers non-EU nationals making a short stay, with exemptions. Visa-free travellers normally register a facial image and four fingerprints; short-stay visa holders have a facial image stored in EES while their fingerprints remain in VIS. ETIAS is due in the last quarter of 2026, followed by transitional and grace periods lasting at least 12 months in total; applications are not open today.
Count your days
Enter your planned arrival and departure plus every relevant previous Schengen entry and exit. The counter looks back 180 days from each planned day, deduplicates overlaps and reports the tightest window and first over-limit day. If a short-stay visa sticker authorises fewer than 90 days, the sticker controls and this calculator does not extend it.
