Which Berlin Court Takes Your Church Exit
Berlin runs church exit declarations through ten Amtsgerichte, and their map still follows the districts the city had before 2001, so four Bezirke are split between two courts. The declaration that stops church tax has to be signed in person, at the Amtsgericht for the address you are registered at, and that court is not always the one in your Bezirk. Prenzlauer Berg goes to Mitte. Wedding and Gesundbrunnen go to Wedding, along with all of Reinickendorf. Tempelhof, Mariendorf, Marienfelde and Lichtenrade go to Kreuzberg, not to Schoeneberg. Why the colours do not match the Bezirke
The court map follows the twenty-three districts Berlin had before the 2001 merger, so four of today Bezirke are split. Prenzlauer Berg is in Bezirk Pankow but belongs to Amtsgericht Mitte. Wedding and Gesundbrunnen are Bezirk Mitte on paper and belong to Amtsgericht Wedding. The old Bezirk Tempelhof goes to Kreuzberg. Schoeneberg and Friedenau go to Schoeneberg with all of Steglitz-Zehlendorf.
What the cost line shows
The exemption from church tax starts at the end of the month in which your declaration reaches the court, so the month you sign is the last month you pay. The dashed green line is what leaves your salary if you go this month. The orange line is what leaves it if you wait until the month you picked. The gap between them is the price of the delay.
The fee and the appointment
The court charges 30 euros, and a notarised signature costs extra on top. Online booking exists at only a few of the ten courts; at the rest you ask for a slot yourself, usually through that court contact form. There is no online route for the declaration itself, and nobody can file it for you with a power of attorney.
What it cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether you are a member. That is the Kirchensteuer or KiSt line on your payslip: if it is not there, you are not paying it. It also cannot tell you how long a particular court is taking to give an appointment, because Berlin does not publish those waits.
