Berlin in April 2027: Weather, Cherry Blossom, Long Evenings and What to Do

April is when Berlin properly turns the corner into spring.

The parks turn green, the cherry trees blossom, terraces fill, and the long evenings come back. The weather is famously unreliable, swinging from warm sun to cold rain in the same day, but the city is alive again, and you still avoid the heat and crowds of high summer. For many people, this is the start of the best stretch of the Berlin year.

Visiting Berlin in April means embracing changeable weather in exchange for blossom, green parks, long days and a city that is fully awake but not yet packed. If you pack for everything, it is a wonderful month.

If you are still choosing your month, compare it with my month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Berlin. If April is already your plan, here is how to make it work.

Is April a Good Time to Visit Berlin?

Yes. April is one of the nicer months to visit Berlin, especially for walkers, photographers and anyone who loves spring.

April is good for:

  • Travellers who want blossom, green parks and long evenings

  • People who like spring energy without summer crowds

  • Walkers and outdoor sightseers, with a rain backup

  • Photographers chasing cherry blossom and fresh light

It is less ideal for:

  • Anyone who needs guaranteed warm, dry weather

  • Travellers who want full lake-and-swimming summer

My honest view: April is a strong, joyful month with one catch, the weather. Plan for sun and rain, stay flexible, and you get one of the most beautiful versions of the city.

It is a great month for my Berlin Free Walking Tour. The light is fresh, the blossom is out, and the comfortable spring temperatures make walking the city a pleasure rather than an endurance test.

Berlin Weather in April

Berlin in April is mild, green and gloriously unpredictable.

Berlin.de's April overview lists an average daily maximum of 13.3 degrees Celsius, an average minimum of 3.4 degrees, about 5.3 hours of sunshine per day, nine rainy days, and 40 mm of rain. It quotes the old proverb that in April, anything from bright sunshine to continuous rain is possible.

In real life, April can give you:

  • A warm, bright 18 degree afternoon that feels like early summer

  • A cold, wet day that sends you back into a jacket

  • A morning frost followed by a sunny afternoon

  • Sudden showers between blue skies

  • Long, golden spring evenings

The trick is layering and a rain plan, not avoidance. April rewards people who go out anyway and adjust. If a wet spell hits, my Berlin in the rain guide helps, but most April days give you good outdoor windows.

Long, Light Evenings Return

April is when the evenings get genuinely long, and the city moves back outdoors.

On April 1, sunrise is around 6:56 am and sunset around 7:56 pm. By April 30, sunset has moved to about 8:43 pm. The clocks have already changed at the end of March, so April simply keeps adding light.

This is one of April's best features. You can sightsee all day and still have a long, bright evening for the Spree, the canals in Kreuzberg, a park, or a terrace dinner. The blue hour stretches out, and the city feels relaxed and alive.

Use it. April evenings are made for slow walks, beer gardens that are reopening, and watching Berlin shake off winter.

What Tourists Get Right and Wrong About April

Tourists get one thing right: April is beautiful when the sun is out.

The first mistake is trusting one forecast. April weather changes fast. Pack for sun and rain, every day.

The second mistake is over-packing for warmth. It is spring, not summer. Mornings and evenings can still be cold, and a warm-but-light jacket beats a heavy coat.

The third mistake is missing the blossom. Berlin's cherry blossom is one of the loveliest, most under-rated spring sights in the city, and it does not last long.

Cherry Blossom Season

April is cherry blossom season in Berlin, and the city has a moving connection to it.

After the Wall fell, thousands of cherry trees were donated, many planted along the former border. Today, stretches of the old Berlin Wall Trail and several parks and avenues burst into pink each spring. It is a beautiful, quietly powerful sight: blossom growing exactly where the Wall once stood.

The exact peak shifts each year with the weather, usually landing in mid to late April, and it only lasts a couple of weeks. If blossom matters to you, keep your plans flexible and ask locals where it is best on your dates. A walking tour is a good way to understand why those particular trees, in those particular places, mean so much.

What to Do in April

April is when outdoor Berlin reopens, so use it.

Walk the parks and the canals. The Tiergarten, the Spree, Kreuzberg's Landwehr Canal and the green edges of the city are at their fresh-spring best. The lidos and lakeside spots start to wake up, though the water is still cold for swimming.

April also brings culture. Gallery Weekend, when the city's galleries open together, usually falls at the end of April or the start of May and is a highlight for art lovers. April 30 is Walpurgisnacht, an old spring-night tradition marked with bonfires, parties and events around the city, rolling straight into the May 1 holiday.

Note that in 2027 Easter falls in March, so April itself is mostly free of holiday closures, which makes planning simpler.

What to Pack for Berlin in April

Pack for changeable spring, leaning mild. Here is the honest list for Berlin in April.

Bring:

  • A warm but light jacket

  • Layers: long-sleeve shirts, a sweater

  • A reliable rain jacket or compact umbrella

  • Comfortable, water-resistant walking shoes

  • Sunglasses for the bright days

  • A lighter top or two for warm afternoons

  • A refillable water bottle

  • A small day bag

You can leave heavy winter gear at home, but do not assume summer. April can still turn cold.

Shoes still matter most. April can be wet and muddy in the parks, and Berlin sightseeing means long distances and cobblestones. Choose comfortable, water-resistant shoes.

What to Book Early

April is shoulder-to-mid season, so booking is moderate.

Book early for:

  • Accommodation around Gallery Weekend and the end-of-month long weekend into May 1

  • The Reichstag Dome, which fills up year-round

  • Popular restaurants on weekend nights

  • Timed slots for major museum exhibitions

For the Reichstag, use my guide to visiting the Reichstag Dome for free.

April still offers reasonable value before the summer peak, so my realistic Berlin daily budget guide is worth a look.

Public Transport in April

Berlin public transport is easy in April, with the May 1 weekend at the very end to note.

The system stays the same: U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus share one ticket structure. My Berlin public transport guide explains zones, tickets and the common mistakes.

April-specific advice:

  • Expect livelier streets and some disruption on the night of April 30 into May 1

  • Carry a rain layer for sudden showers

  • Validate paper tickets before riding

For ticket validation, read my guide on validating Berlin train tickets.

If you arrive at BER Airport and stay central, my BER to Alexanderplatz guide is a simple starting point.

A Good April Day in Berlin

Here is how I would structure an April day for a first-time visitor:

Morning: Start with a walking tour or a central route while the morning light is fresh.

Lunch: Eat near Hackescher Markt, Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg or Kreuzberg.

Afternoon: Walk the parks, the canals or the cherry blossom if the sun is out, or a museum if the weather turns.

Evening: Use the long light for the Spree, a beer garden or a terrace dinner.

If you have three days, use my Berlin in 3 days itinerary as the base, then add a blossom walk or Gallery Weekend if your dates fit.

Where to Stay in April

April is flexible, so choose your base for the trip you want.

Good practical areas include:

  • Mitte, for central history and walking

  • Prenzlauer Berg, for cafes and calm

  • Kreuzberg, for food, bars and the canal

  • Friedrichshain, for nightlife and the East Side Gallery

  • Charlottenburg, for west Berlin and museums

My guide to where to stay in Berlin goes deeper by traveller type.

My Honest Advice

April is Berlin coming fully back to life, and it is hard not to enjoy it.

You get blossom, green parks, long evenings and a lively city, all without the heat and crowds of high summer. The one catch is the weather, which can swing from warm sun to cold rain in an afternoon. Pack for both, stay flexible, and April delivers one of the most beautiful versions of the city.

So bring layers and a rain jacket. Chase the cherry blossom while it lasts. Use the long evenings outdoors. Take the changeable weather as part of the deal. Then enjoy a fresh, blossoming, good-value Berlin in the best part of spring.

That is Berlin in April. Green, pink, unpredictable, and very much alive.
